Statistician and Mathematician, 2 positions - Visual Numerics (Houston, TX)

Visual Numerics, Inc. is currently seeking a Statistician and Mathematician to complete their staff in the Corporate office located in Houston, Texas.

Visual Numerics provides leading technical solutions for numerical analysis and visual data analysis to users in a broad range of industries including High Performance Computing and predictive analytics. Established in 1970, the company has a proven track record of delivering innovative products, The IMSL® Numerical Libraries and The PV-WAVE®Family. The IMSL Numerical Libraries provide a comprehensive set of embeddable mathematical and statistical algorithms, written in C, C#, Java, and FORTRAN and recently we had added Python to our lineup. The PV-WAVE Family of products delivers easy to use software that allows users to quickly understand and visualize data with broad visualization functionality.

Candidates for both positions must possess the ability to read, interpret, and perform software development activities including research, programming (C/C++ or FORTRAN or Java on UNIX and/or Windows environments), consulting, and documentation.

Degree requirements for the Statistician candidate carry a minimum of a Masters degree in Statistics with a PhD preferred. We are looking for people with experience in Bayesian Statistics, CART, Genetic Algorithms, Neural Network, Modeling, and Simulation. The successful candidate will design, develop, debug, and test statistical analysis functions utilized in our software products. This position is also responsible for reviewing current product statistical capabilities and making recommendations to enhance program performance.

A Masters degree in Computer Science is the basis for our Mathematician position. Experience in Parallel Computing and Numerical Analysis is necessary with Statistics and Financial Analysis experience a definite plus. One of the primary responsibilities of the Mathematician position is to develop, debug, and test mathematical and statistical analysis functions used in Visual Numerics’ products. In addition, providing technical leadership and training, writing and reviewing documentation is another main focus of this position.

Senior Business Intelligence Analyst (Chicago, IL)

Job Summary

The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst works closely with our product management organization to productize predictive models solutions on all aspect of product life cycle – create, plans, design, development and implement. This individual will work collaboratively with clients to understand and define their objectives and goals and to design and lead program strategy based on nature of client data, processes and needs. He/she will work with our client staff to extract available data; devise creative solutions to accommodate partial data sets.

Accountabilities

  • Develop predictive models solutions for customers on all aspects of product life cycle - create, plan, design, development and implementation
  • Work collaboratively with clients to understand and define objectives and goals.
  • Define client objectives and goals and design and lead program strategy based on nature of client datea, processes and needs.
  • Monitor, track and understand industry trends and the factors that drive them.
  • Troubleshoot technical and non-technical challenges
  • Proactively analyze data to identify immediate improvement opportunities.
  • Report results to Product Manager, Sales or Customer (depending on relationship) the recommendations from the analysis.
  • Develop and present deliverables for a assigned customers
  • Provide benchmarking and other comparative analyses of similar companies utilizing data mining tools and other data technology tools

Requirements:
  • Advanced degree in statistics, economics or math
  • MBA or another business degree (finance, marketing, accounting)
  • 6-8 years of research, statistical analysis and business experience required.
  • Proficiency in statistical software packages (SAS or SPSS) required.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Access required.
  • Excellent skills demonstrating high proficiency in statistical analysis
  • Excellent communication skills and high profile presentations preferred.
  • Business consulting experience in Business Intelligence preferred.
  • Automotive and Insurance Industry experience is plus.

The job

As the Head of Data & User Insights you will be responsible for building and leading a team of computer scientists and engineers responsible for developing a new platform that captures, analyzes, models various insights from sharing behavior of users. This is a key strategic initiative for the company and means you will have significant visibility at senior levels.

This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Innovative Product Development: The successful candidate will be responsible for innovating and shaping a new product that benefits users, publishers, and advertisers. You will lead a team to conceptualize product components, technology architecture, implementation and integration between various systems within the company that will collectively work together to deliver a solution. Much of this involves significant innovation and “breaking new ground”.
  • Technology Architecture: As the senior technology leader you will own the platform architecture and insure that it is highly scalable, extensible, and adaptive as it evolves through the next 12-18 months.
  • Product Rollout: The current plan is to test launch in US in 1H’09. You will work with Product Management and other technology groups in defining the roadmap, scope, deliverables. You will be responsible to drive an iterative approach to rollout in testing, refining, and improving features based on audience response.
  • Business Integration: There are a number of ways to develop and grow the Data/User Insight product such as influencing content viewed by users through partnerships with publishers and advertisers. You will develop collaborative relationships with our Business Development & Sales teams to help analyze and scope solutions that impact our customers.

  • Authorship of technical papers, whitepapers, or published analytical studies
  • Experience in preparing and delivering presentations both to clients and at conferences Preferred:
  • Advanced knowledge of home price index methodologies, including the use of Fast Fourier Transform-based techniques
  • Experience in the application of home price models to mortgage portfolios
