Subject Matter Expert, IT Network - BP (Houston, TX)

IT&S plays a critical role in the delivery of defined world-class operational services that BP businesses can rely upon in support of their own performance. Our specific accountabilities include the delivery of services to specified target levels, including availability, recoverability and cost to the corporation. These services must also be delivered safely and secured against the growing risk of viruses and other security threats.

Description

The post holder is a ‘link’ between architecture, standards, operations and customers, and as such will be accountable for the integrity of US Hosting Operations existing network systems as well as operational continuity during introduction of new components across our key data centres in Houston, Chicago and Tulsa. Taking a lead in evolving the network infrastructure into a more efficient and cost effective solution is a key expectation.

The individual in this position will understand how network systems interface and interact with applications and with other parts of the infrastructure. A key accountability will be the integration of application solutions into the network infrastructure with the ability to articulate clearly the benefits of a tiered network on applications and service differentiation.

The Network SME will:

- Liaise with IT&S, GOI and the Data Centre Global Services and Standards team to understand standards and stay abreast of relevant technology roadmaps.
- Work with data centre operations managers to define application of network standards.
- Provide guidance to new systems development and project teams on network standards.
- Work with project teams to directly integrate and coordinate implementation of network solutions in production environments.
- Work with SDOs to develop end-to-end technical solutions, installation, configuration and operating plans.
- Manage work requests and coordinate multiple implementation projects.
- When required, provide day to day oversight to third party vendors supporting network components.
- Guide third party vendors in the creation of DR / BCP plans pertaining to the network.
- Provide expert consulting and solutions to business units to meet specific network needs.
- Contribute to and develop best practices, strategies, methodologies and documentation/templates.
- Develop strategies and propose solutions to optimise utilisation of existing infrastructure and the deployment of right network solutions to reduce the overall cost of operations and investment.

This role involves interaction across the US Hosting Operations organisation, Regional Infrastructure teams and segment/function IT&S teams to ensure network standards are appropriately applied.

Requirements

a. Educational background
- Graduate level or demonstrable equivalent.
b. Experience (years and nature)
- Minimum 7 - 10 years post graduate business experience.
- Proven track record and expertise in the area of network solutions.
- Background and experience in the management of enterprise-class data centre projects
- Prefer CCIE certification
c. Other
- Strong understand of ITIL Service Continuity management principles.
- Strong project, programme, budget and resource management skills.
- Ability to influence and negotiate, achieving desired decisions and outcomes.
- Ability to optimise resources from divers environments and cultures.
