Software Dev Engineer, Product Ads: Ad Targeting

Amazon.com’s Product Ads team is looking for exceptional software engineers to develop algorithms and build systems to solve a variety of Information Retrieval, Data Mining, and Distributed Caching problems related to Ad Targeting – one of the company’s biggest opportunities for growth. Our principal challenge is to drive monetization by selecting the most relevant ads to show to a particular customer on a particular page. We have a variety of data available to help us make targeting decisions, including customer behavior, historical ad performance, and page context. However, the volume of data and the combinatorial effect of multiple dimensions of data pose a challenge for storing, processing, and effectively using this data. Ads need to be delivered in tens of milliseconds, compounding the problem further. The Product Ads team is building a highly scalable, distributed ad platform that addresses these problems using an innovative mix of Information Retrieval, Clustering, and Distributed Caching techniques. Product Ads is a high-profile, highly strategic business unit, with support and interest from all parts of Amazon and top management. We are a highly motivated, cooperative and fun-loving team with a mandate for and record of invention and experimentation. As part of this team you will be working with large volumes of data to extract insight using statistics, data mining, and machine learning techniques; then, using these insights, you will build next generation monetization algorithms and models for ad auctions and ad networks. The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

• PhD or/and an Advanced degree in Computer Science, Math or related field with 5+ years of experience.
• Past experience in at least one of the following areas – Information Retrieval, Data Mining, Statistics, Auction Theory, or Machine Learning.
• Desire to analyze data while developing solutions to problems.
• Strong desire to build high-performance, highly-available and scalable distributed systems.
• Strong design and coding skills in Java/C++ on Unix Platforms.
• Familiarity with Perl and an understanding of SQL.
• Highly innovative, flexible and self-directed.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
