Management Information/Business Intelligence - Travelers Insurance (St Paul, MN)


The primary focus of this position is on HR metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs). This includes the development of HR business processes and applications to support the creation and production of HR metrics as well as the analysis and design of those metrics. The ideal candidate will be able to identify and graphically depict central ideas, themes and conclusions from detail data in support of business unit objectives and goals and implement the results in Cognos.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • Develops and codes HR metrics and KPIs in Cognos business intelligence tool using data from various sources.
  • Provides expert application systems analysis for specific assignments.
  • Assigned to a single systems or group of small systems.
  • May assist less experienced analysts in completing tasks.
  • Under moderate supervision, coordinates information systems changes and implementation processes.
  • Acts as the interface between the business, systems, and the technical support areas when additional technical support is required.
  • Has expert knowledge of applications systems analysis techniques and has demonstrated ability to perform application systems analysis functions at a very high degree of accuracy and speed. Has expert level knowledge of the business that the assigned systems are supporting.
  • Assists with analysis and understanding of business processes to ensure the successful coordination and integration of business requirements within the department and corporate application environment.
  • With a business line and system expertise, assists project planning and coordination of the business testing activities.
  • Provides analytical and solution decision support for the implementation and upgrades of department/ corporate applications to include development assistance, application testing and identifying/ resolving issues of low to moderate complexity.
  • Has general understanding of business needs and assists in implementation of department/corporate solutions.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Quality Control:

  • Reviews HR metrics and data for consistency within the company and across the industry.
  • Develops controls to ensure data integrity and quality.
  • Continuously monitors output for accuracy and proactively seeks ways to automate processes to minimize the possibility for errors.

Process Improvement:
  • Consistently being proactive in looking for ways to streamline all processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Analytical Skills:
  • Able to identify key points or conclusions from detail data and clearly articulate the results.
  • Compiles data as requested by supervisor. Completes analysis and summarizes results.

Data Management:
  • Able to organize and store data with expert level efficiency.

PC Skills:
  • Able to compile and manipulate date from various sources quickly and efficiently.

Project Planning and Testing
  • Assists with the creation of business requirements
  • Assists in creating business and IT specifications
  • Gives input on formulating test strategy and implementation plans
  • Assists with test scripts
  • Assists with testing process
  • Assists with implementation

  • Summarizes results and reports findings to supervisor/customer.
  • May be requested to present information to upper level management.
  • Provides off-shift support as necessary.

Education / Work Experience
  • College degree preferred (in HR, Business, Mathematics, Statistics or related field).
  • Generally 3-5 yrs experience.

  • Advanced skill level with general PC applications including all aspects of MS Office Suite.
