THE POSITION

This position is responsible for the overall architecture and design of databases, data warehousing and data mart systems and services. This individual will provide the optimization of database management systems in all products to achieve data integrity and performance goals. They also are responsible for creating/refining the data architecture, standards, policies and procedures to drive all database design and maintenance within the Research and Development Division. In particular, the successful candidate will be responsible to:

  1. Create and maintain data architecture for products that will increase the robustness, performance, and scalability of the applications. (Approximately 50% of job)
    • Design and extend the persistence management layer that insulates the database from the application layer
    • Contribute substantially to the system architecture, and take ownership of the design and development of the database layer
    • Work with system architects to improve existing OLTP (online transaction processing) model, transaction cost reduction, and increase the overall data throughput
  2. Provide data architecture standards, policies and procedures to drive all database design and maintenance. (Approximately 40% of job)
    • Assist in developing coding standards for Java, JDBC, stored procedures, triggers, and logical and physical schema design
    • Participate in design and code reviews, documentation of design, and implementation of methodologies to ensure high quality software
  3. Establish an architecture roadmap for operational and business intelligence reporting, and provide guidance to the Product Management and Engineering Groups to assure compliance with the roadmap (Approximately 5% of job)
    • Tune SQL queries and database performance for OLTP and DSS (decision support systems) applications within the development environment
    • Provide input and participation to all defect analysis and defect reduction processes
    • Participate in the recommendation and implementation of process improvement action plans in conjunction with the Quality Assurance team


Competencies and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Computer Science or Software Engineering from four-year institution and seven or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in business, computers, management, or related fields are preferred.
  • Strong technical leadership skills with extensive hands on experience.
  • Proven innovative and analytical ability with extensive implementation skills.
  • Expertise on DBMS kernels with distinguished achievements on database query optimization.
  • Experience with design and construction of Data Mart and/or Data for business intelligence.
  • Programming experience is required.
  • Proven experience with object oriented design and development, using Java and JDBC.
  • Experience with 3-tier e-commerce server side applications using EJBs (Enterprise Java Beans) or other component architectures (such as CORBA, DCOM, etc), Servlets, XML, SQL, etc.
  • Specific experience with BEA/WebLogic (or other such application servers like WebSphere, ATG/Dynamo, etc.) is beneficial.
