THE POSITION

To solidify its position as the recognized leader in collection software, the company has created aggressive growth plans for the next two years. In order to support these goals, the Research and Development Division has reorganized its approach and resources, including the creation of a centralized Design Group. The company is seeking an innovative and entrepreneurial individual to lead this group in the design and delivery of industry-leading products.

This position will provide software design leadership with an emphasis on quality and simplicity in product delivery. In addition, he/she will define and develop a project management infrastructure, promote teamwork across the Design Department and software engineers by providing consistency in product designs and ensure software familiarity and reusability and maintain a keen awareness of industry tools and best practices. The successful candidate will need to establish and maintain effective relationships with Product Management and Engineering, balancing their needs and requirements in developing the best product for the customers.

In particular, this position will be responsible for leading and managing the department’s design projects, including:

  • Developing and implementing a structured processes and procedures for project estimation
  • Delivering training opportunities to employees on basic design tools and methodologies
  • Ensure group participation in the development and compliance of standards
  • Continually remain cognizant of product development and design needs
  • Leading feasibility studies, benchmarking, and risk analysis to ensure product stability and consistency
  • Building effective relationships with the following Groups:

    1. Technology Group
      • Understand our technology direction and translate into design tasks
      • Understand major product directions and provide design solutions consistent with planned product direction
      • Understand hardware and software connectivity needs and messaging interfaces

    2. Product Management Group
      • Work with the Product Management group to ensure the Design team:
      • Understands the business needs of our customers;
      • Identifies and understands the product requirement needs of our customers

    3. Quality Group
      • Ensure the Design team properly implements standard processes and adheres to quality assurance standards

  • Providing leadership, coaching and ongoing feedback and development in order to build the competence of the team and implement the appropriate succession planning for the team. This will include the creation of a supervisory level within the group who will need to have the appropriate skills to conduct hiring, provide corrective counseling and recommend appropriate rewards and development for their teams
  • Remaining abreast of current technological trends and best practices to ensure company’s products remain marketable and competitive. This will include proactively directing the study and research of technologies and how they may be applied to future initiatives and the evaluation of new technologies and software products to determine feasibility or integration into current or future products.

In addition, a Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Computer Science or Computer Engineering from four-year institution; or over ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Over five years of leadership experience in managing software designers, multiple large design projects, and influencing key management. Advanced technical and business knowledge in software development life cycle, quality assurance, project management, and other related disciplines is required. Knowledge of software modeling tools (UML, Entity Relationship diagrams, etc.) is required and the following experiences are strongly preferred:
  • Formal application development methodology
  • Service oriented architecture
  • Graphical user interface design and usability measurement
  • Database design
  • Object-oriented application design
  • Enterprise application design and development
  • Web application design
