The Research and Development Department at Travelers
Travelers is the fifth largest publicly held Property & Casualty insurance company (#89 on Fortune 500) and boasts one of the largest Research & Development teams in the industry. New members of the department will collaborate with credentialed actuaries and staff members with advanced degrees in statistics and mathematics. The group¿s leadership has written academic papers and presented topics to actuarial audiences on subject matter that is shaping tomorrow¿s insurance industry. With this level of subject matter proficiency, the team¿s mission is to build strategic competitive advantages for the company through innovation and statistical rigor. Position Summary
As a Director, you will employ the most advanced predictive modeling and data mining tools and methodologies in cutting-edge research. You will manage strategic projects like next generation customer pricing plans, optimization of marketing practices, assessment of commission structures, and improvement in reserving practices. You will manage multiple analysts through every aspect of high-profile projects: data preparation, analysis, and communication. The ability to juggle management of numerous high-profile projects and tasks is critical. Additional responsibilities include employee development, communication to upper-level management, maintaining relationships with partner areas, and influencing team and company direction.
Primary Duties
- Define and plan projects based on business needs
- Manage all aspects of large, high-profile statistical modeling and data mining projects
- Maintain relationships with business partners, clients and vendors
- Contribute to direction of team and company
Work Experience
- 7+ years of research, modeling or actuarial experience
- Proven ability in statistical modeling and data mining techniques (GLM, clustering, decision trees, etc.)
- Experience in preparing large, complex, and dirty datasets for analysis
- Knowledge of insurance products and operations
- Strong project management skills
- Prior supervisory experience
- Familiarity with SAS programming a plus
Certificates/Degrees
- College degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, finance, actuarial science, engineering or related field.
- Advanced degree in statistics (or related field) a plus
- ACAS or FCAS designation a plus
This is a full-time position.
