The Research and Development Department at Travelers

Travelers is the fifth largest publicly held Property & Casualty insurance company (#89 on Fortune 500) and boasts one of the largest Research & Development teams in the industry. New members of the department will have the opportunity to collaborate with credentialed actuaries and staff members with advanced degrees in statistics and mathematics. The group¿s leadership has written academic papers and presented topics to actuarial audiences on subject matter that is shaping tomorrow¿s insurance industry. With this level of subject matter proficiency, the team¿s mission is to build strategic competitive advantages for the company through innovation and statistical rigor. Position Summary

Analysts will employ the most advanced predictive modeling tools and methodologies in cutting-edge research. New team members will assist on strategic projects like next generation customer pricing plans, monitoring of claim behavior, and studying distribution channel performance. Through training that is both formal and on-the-job, analysts will become effective contributors to our research community.

Primary Duties

  • Dig deeply into a varying array of large data sources. Discover issues, identify potential uses, and prepare for analysis.
  • Plan and conduct cutting-edge predictive modeling and other statistical analyses
  • Communicate issues and results to different audiences, from peers to upper level management

Work Experience
  • Either 1 to 3 years insurance experience or advanced statistical (or related) degree
  • Proven ability in complex quantitative analysis
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Experience in identification and resolution of data issues
  • Demonstrated SAS programming experience
  • Basic knowledge of insurance products and operations
  • Self-starting attitude
  • Consistently high attention to detail
  • Strong self-management skills

Communication Skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate project status and needs to manager
  • Experience in creating and maintaining project documentation
  • Experience presenting detailed technical work to a variety of audiences

Computer Skills
  • Proficient in SAS
  • Proficient in Excel

Certificates/Degrees

College degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, finance, actuarial science, engineering or related field.

This is a mid-level full-time position.
