Position Summary
In this unique position the chosen candidate will have the chance to learn about all aspects of the personal property and casualty insurance industry from true experts in the field. The incumbent will gain knowledge and experience that could lead to a variety of opportunities for advancement.
We are looking for a creative, logical, inquisitive, assertive analyst to develop key data sets for our Research and Modeling projects. This analyst will learn about insurance products, isolate new data sources/elements, utilize SAS to develop and perform extract/transformation/load (ETL) logic, delve into root cause analyses, and validate crucial data sources. This position offers diverse responsibilities that change with each new project. The incumbent will reside in a business organization and partner with our Research Modeling staff, Product Management organization, IT organization, and external vendors to develop extremely large data sets to support our modeling efforts. Primary Duties
- Obtain, load and cleanse data sources
- Develop and perform extract/transformation/load (ETL) logic
- Manipulate extremely large data sets using SAS (primarily), Access, Excel and other tools
- Serve as a leading expert for our internal modeling data sets that the incumbent will be responsible for building
- Validate data through reasonability tests, balancing and other methods
- Build efficient data procedures
- Analyze root causes of data issues
- Write Unix scripts
- Program SAS Macros
Work Experience
- Demonstrated SAS/SQL programming experience is required; including expertise in SAS Macros and SQL concepts
- Extensive experience analyzing and manipulating large data sets is essential
- Hands on experience in designing, developing, implementing, and validating mapping/ETL processes
- Moderate knowledge of database principles; including linking data across multiple data sources, building moderate to complex queries, and checking data for errors
- Experience with varied internal and external complex data sources
- Expertise in identification of data discrepancies and resolution of these issues
- Self-management of data oriented projects
- Basic knowledge of insurance products and operations
- Excellent problem-solving skills

- Strong quantitative/analytical background
- Consistent high attention to detail
Communication Skills
- Effectively communicates project status and needs to manager in concise and efficient manner
- Experience in creating new and maintaining project documentation including; project plans, procedures/data manipulations, issues lists, status, and timelines
- Has experience communicating detailed technical work to non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated ability to interface with business users to clarify ETL requirements and business rules
- Experience in working with business partners/vendors to translate business requirements into potentially complex technical solutions that meet or exceed our business needs
Computer Skills
- Solid understanding of computers, programming, database tools/software, and Microsoft productivity applications
- Expert knowledge in SAS (Base SAS, Data Step, and Proc SQL, SAS Macro), or moderate knowledge of SAS and SQL with strong aptitude
- Unix experience, preferred
Certificates/Degrees
College degree in MIS, programming, mathematics, economics, finance, actuarial science or related field.
